Koh Samui’s restaurant scene has evolved well beyond the pad thai and green curry staples of early tourism. Today the island offers genuine culinary depth — French-trained chefs cooking Thai fusion, Japanese omakase counters hidden in residential lanes, and beachfront seafood so fresh it was still swimming that morning. Here’s how to eat well across the island, area by area.

Bangrak and Big Buddha Area

The stretch of road running south from the Big Buddha temple toward Bangrak Pier is one of the island’s most underrated dining zones. It serves primarily the local expat community and the growing residential crowd — meaning prices are honest and quality is consistent.

• Beachside seafood restaurants — several simple restaurants right on Bangrak Beach serve the morning’s catch grilled over charcoal. Order the whole fish. The setting — plastic chairs, sea directly in front, no tourist pricing — is the authentic Koh Samui experience.
• Bangrak Morning Market — not a restaurant, but some of the island’s best eating is done on the street by 7 am. Kanom jeen (rice noodles with coconut fish curry), fried eggs and pork, fresh fruit, and mango sticky rice from market vendors.

Choeng Mon and Plai Laem

The north of the island has a growing restaurant scene driven by its upscale villa community. The emphasis here is on quality over quantity — a small number of genuinely excellent venues:

• Several Italian-owned trattorias serving wood-fired pizza and fresh pasta with Gulf views
• A handful of Thai restaurants where recipes haven’t been adjusted for foreign palates — authentic, spicy, and exceptional
• Resort-attached restaurants with sea view terraces where the food quality has risen to match the setting

Bophut Fisherman’s Village

The island’s most atmospheric dining area. The old village lane is lined with restaurants ranging from French bistros to Thai seafood, all housed in restored traditional shophouses. The Friday Night Walking Street turns the whole area into an open-air food festival. Notable experiences:

• French and Mediterranean cuisine — several long-established French restaurants around the village attract a discerning expat clientele and maintain consistently high standards.
• Beachfront tables — the best restaurants on the Bophut waterfront have tables literally on the sand facing the illuminated Big Buddha across the bay at night.

Chaweng

The widest range of options on the island but also the most variable quality. As a rule: avoid the restaurants directly on the beach road main strip (tourist traps with mediocre food at elevated prices) and look a lane or two inland for genuine quality. Chaweng has excellent Japanese restaurants, Korean BBQ, Indian cuisine, and a Michelin-recognised Thai restaurant in its better offerings.

Lamai

A secondary dining hub with a strong Thai food scene and several respected seafood restaurants. The area has fewer international options than Chaweng but a more local character in its restaurants.

What to Order in Koh Samui

The island’s signature dishes reflect its southern Thai and seafood heritage:

• Massaman curry — richer and more aromatic than central Thai curries, with a hint of peanut and spice
• Tom kha kai — coconut milk soup with galangal, lemongrass, and chicken
• Whole grilled barramundi with garlic and chilli
• Koh Samui lobster — the local spiny lobster, grilled with garlic butter
• Fresh coconut ice cream — from a market vendor, served in the shell
• Roti with banana and condensed milk — a Thai Muslim street food staple, eaten at any hour

Dining from a Villa

One of the underused luxuries of a private villa is the private chef option. Many villa management companies can arrange an evening where a Thai chef comes to your villa, shops at the morning market for the freshest ingredients, and prepares a multi-course meal for your group at the villa’s dining table. The cost is remarkably affordable — typically 500-1,000 THB per person for a full meal — and the experience of a chef-prepared Thai dinner overlooking the sea is something most restaurants can’t match.
