While Koh Samui’s east coast is famous for its sunrises, the island’s sunsets — viewed from the west-facing coast — are among the finest in Thailand. The silhouettes of the Ang Thong Marine Park islands on the horizon, the mirror-flat Gulf water in the dry season, and the way the light changes from gold to pink to deep red in the last 15 minutes before the sun drops — Koh Samui delivers sunsets that match anywhere in Southeast Asia. Here’s where to find them.

Nathon Pier (West Coast)

The island’s best sunset from sea level. Nathon is Koh Samui’s quiet capital on the west coast, and the old pier extends out into the Gulf directly facing west. On clear evenings, the sun sets directly over or between the Ang Thong islands in the distance, and the pier offers an unobstructed 180-degree view of the horizon. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset and walk to the end of the pier. Almost no tourists come here.

Taling Ngam Beach

The most beautiful beach on the west coast — a long, curved bay with fine sand and minimal development. The water is very calm year-round (sheltered from the northeast monsoon), and the sunset reflects across its surface as the light drops. Several small restaurants set up tables on the beach in the evenings.

Lipa Noi Beach

A quieter beach immediately south of Nathon with clear water and a local fishing community. Very few tourists reach this stretch, and it has a genuinely peaceful character at sunset. The ferry terminal at nearby Na Thon sees boats arriving and departing in the golden hour — an atmospheric addition to the scene.

Choeng Mon and Plai Laem: The Northern Glow

While the north coast faces east (sunrise territory), the sky to the west from elevated positions in Plai Laem can catch dramatic colour in the last 30 minutes before dark. The light softens over the sea, and from a hillside villa terrace you can watch the colours shift from the east coast’s own gentle dusk. Not a true west-facing sunset, but a beautiful twilight nevertheless.

Sunset From the Sea: Private Boat Charter

The finest Koh Samui sunset experience is from a private boat. Charter a longtail or speedboat from Bangrak Pier and head west or northwest toward the Ang Thong islands in the late afternoon. As the sun drops, you have an unobstructed 360-degree view of the horizon — the islands silhouetted, the sea changing colour beneath you. A 2-hour charter for two runs approximately 2,500-4,000 THB, including the skipper.

Sunset Beach Clubs

Several beach clubs on the west coast and around Lamai are positioned for evening gatherings. The west coast options in particular have a more local, relaxed atmosphere than the Chaweng party scene — cold drinks, comfortable seating, the sunset as the entertainment.

Sky Bar Rooftops

A small number of elevated venues in Chaweng and Lamai offer rooftop bars with west-facing views across the island’s interior. While these don’t have sea-facing sunset views (the west coast is 20+ minutes away), the elevated perspective gives a wide panorama of the island landscape as the sky colours.
