Most visitors to Koh Samui orbit around Chaweng Beach and the airport strip, missing the island’s most extraordinary corners entirely. The hidden gems of Koh Samui — the quiet bays, hillside temples, dawn markets, and secluded villa communities — reward those willing to venture beyond the obvious. Here’s where to look.

Plai Laem: The Island’s Most Underrated Area

Tucked between the Big Buddha and Choeng Mon, Plai Laem is one of Koh Samui’s most genuinely special areas. It has the magnificent Plai Laem Temple (Wat Plai Laem) with its striking 18-armed Guanyin statue rising from the water, accessible on a small footbridge. The temple complex is far less visited than the Big Buddha despite being arguably more architecturally remarkable.

The residential hillside above Plai Laem offers some of the island’s most dramatic sea views — particularly the panoramic sunrise over the Gulf of Thailand and the outer islands. Most visitors to Koh Samui never come here.

Nathon: The Quiet Capital

Nathon is Koh Samui’s administrative capital and ferry port on the west coast — and almost entirely off the tourist trail. The old town has a preserved shophouse row, a daily morning market, and a waterfront promenade largely populated by locals rather than visitors. The seafood restaurants here are exceptional and priced for residents, not tourists.

Bang Po Beach (North Coast)

A narrow strip of sand on the far north coast with clear, shallow water and virtually no tourist infrastructure. A few local restaurants serve fresh fish to the handful of visitors who find the place. Best at low tide when the sandbars extend. The water is calm year-round due to the natural shelter of the headland.

Na Muang Waterfall 2

Na Muang 1 gets the guidebook attention. Na Muang 2 — reached by a 1.5 km uphill hike from the lower falls — is dramatically more impressive and sees perhaps 10% of the visitors. The upper falls drop into a wide natural pool perfect for swimming, surrounded by jungle. The hike is steep in places; wear decent shoes and go early to beat the heat.

Hin Ta and Hin Yai at Dawn

Everyone visits the famous rock formations at Lamai at mid-morning when the tour buses arrive. Go at 6 am. The rising light on the rocks and the near-empty beach make it a completely different experience — one of the island’s genuinely magical moments.

The Friday Night Market at Bophut: Go Early

The Fisherman’s Village Friday Walking Street is the island’s best night market, but most tourists arrive at 8 pm when it’s crowded. Arrive at 5:30–6 pm as the stalls are setting up, the light is golden, and you can browse unhurried. The range of local crafts, food, and live music rewards early arrivals far more than those who come later.

Samui Elephant Sanctuary

One of the island’s best-kept positive secrets. Unlike the riding camps that still operate elsewhere, the Samui Elephant Sanctuary focuses entirely on rescue and welfare. Visitors can feed, walk with, and watch elephants in a natural hillside environment. Small group sizes keep it intimate. Book far in advance — it fills up weeks ahead.

Hillside Villas with Private Sunrise Views

The single most underutilised experience in Koh Samui is watching the sunrise from a private hillside villa facing east over the Gulf of Thailand. The view from the right property in the Plai Laem or Choeng Mon area — at 5:30–6 am, coffee in hand, before the day’s heat arrives — is one of the most quietly spectacular experiences the island offers. It requires nothing except waking up early and being in the right place.
