Packing for a Koh Samui villa stay is different from packing for a hotel holiday. With your own private kitchen, pool, and space, you have more flexibility — but the tropical climate, outdoor lifestyle, and local environment require some specific preparation. Here’s the complete packing list to get right before you fly.

Clothing

Koh Samui is hot and humid year-round. The aim is lightweight, breathable fabrics that dry quickly and don’t look out of place moving from beach to restaurant.

• Lightweight linen or cotton shirts (5-7 for a week’s stay)
• Swim shorts or bikinis (3-4 sets — they dry fast but you’ll use them daily)
• One light evening outfit for smarter restaurants or events
• A light cardigan or wrap for air-conditioned restaurants and evening breezes
• Flip flops (buy on the island — cheap and better quality than bringing worn ones from home)
• Comfortable walking sandals for market days and temple visits
• One pair of trainers if you plan hiking, Muay Thai, or padel

Leave the jeans at home. You won’t wear them.

Sun and Heat Protection

• SPF 50+ sunscreen — bring a good supply. Reef-safe brands are preferred for snorkelling days at Ang Thong. Local sunscreen is available but expensive.
• After-sun or aloe vera gel — essential for the first few days before your skin adapts.
• Sunglasses — quality UV protection, not fashion pieces.
• Wide-brim hat — especially important for daytime excursions and market days.
• UV rashguard — if you plan significant time snorkelling or on the water.

Health and Medical Essentials

• Insect repellent with DEET — mosquitoes are more active in the wet season and around dusk. Don’t rely on citronella candles alone.
• Antihistamines — for insect bites and any unexpected allergic reactions.
• Diarrhoea medication (Imodium) — even with careful eating, your stomach may need a day to adjust to the heat and new food.
• Rehydration sachets — dehydration in tropical heat is fast. Electrolytes help enormously after a long day in the sun.
• Prescription medications in original packaging — Thai customs require prescriptions for controlled substances.
• Basic first aid kit — plasters, antiseptic wipes, blister plasters for new sandals.

Tech and Connectivity

• Universal travel adapter — Thailand uses Types A, B, and C sockets. A universal adapter is the safest option.
• Portable power bank — for long day trips away from the villa.
• Waterproof phone case or dry bag — for speedboat trips, kayaking at Choeng Mon, and any rainy-season downpours.
• Underwater camera or GoPro — snorkelling in the Ang Thong Marine Park deserves documentation.

Buy a local Thai SIM on arrival at Koh Samui Airport — DTAC and AIS tourist packages are excellent value and eliminate roaming charges.

What NOT to Pack (Buy It There Instead)

Several items are significantly cheaper and often better quality when bought on the island:

• Flip flops and beach sandals
• Sarongs and beach wraps (night market, 50-100 THB)
• Light cotton trousers
• Fresh fruit — papaya, mango, dragonfruit, rambutan from morning markets
• Beach toys and snorkelling gear (available to rent at Choeng Mon Beach)

Documents and Money

• Passport (valid for 6 months beyond your travel dates)
• Return flight confirmation
• Villa booking confirmation with address and host contact
• Travel insurance certificate with the 24-hour emergency number
• Small amount of Thai Baht cash for markets, tuk-tuks, and songthaews — ATMs are available across the island but charge foreign card fees

Villa-Specific Items

Most private villas provide towels, toiletries, and kitchen basics. However, if you have specific preferences:

• Your preferred coffee (a good Moka pot and quality coffee elevates villa mornings significantly)
• A Kindle or books — the villa terrace and poolside are made for reading
• A Bluetooth speaker for evenings by the pool
