Koh Samui’s seasons don’t follow the same pattern as the rest of Thailand, and understanding the difference is essential for planning a villa rental on the island. Unlike Phuket and Krabi, which have a distinct May-October monsoon, Koh Samui’s wettest period falls later in the year — making the island an excellent choice when the rest of Thailand’s coasts are underwater.

Understanding Koh Samui’s Two Weather Patterns

Koh Samui sits on the eastern side of the Gulf of Thailand, which means it receives rain from the northeast monsoon (October–January) rather than the southwest monsoon that affects the Andaman coast. This creates a different seasonal rhythm from Phuket:

• December–January: Can be wet and occasionally stormy, particularly November through December. The tail end of the northeast monsoon brings the heaviest rain of the year.
• February–April: Transitional period. Increasingly dry, warm, and sunny. March and April are among the most pleasant months on the island.
• May–September: Koh Samui’s dry season. Warm, sunny, and calm seas. While the Andaman coast is being drenched, Koh Samui enjoys its best weather.
• October–November: Increasingly wet. Can experience very heavy downpours, particularly November. Not ideal for villa stays focused on outdoor living.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January

Transitioning out of the wet season. Prices remain elevated from the December peak but weather can still be unpredictable. Good if flexibility on prices matters more than guaranteed sunshine.

February

One of the best months. Drier, pleasant temperatures (28-32C), and post-peak-season prices. Valentine’s and Chinese New Year see a brief spike in demand.

March and April

Excellent months. Dry, warm, and increasingly calm seas. Songkran (Thai New Year) in mid-April brings a festive atmosphere across the island.

May through August

The island’s true dry season and arguably the best time to visit. The Gulf of Thailand is calm and clear — ideal for snorkelling day trips to Ang Thong Marine Park from Bangrak Pier. Villa rates drop 30-50% from peak season. Beaches are quieter. The overall experience is often better than the peak months at a fraction of the cost.

September

Very quiet. Lower prices, occasional showers but still largely sunny. A good time for those seeking genuine solitude at a luxury villa.

October and November

Rain increases significantly. November is typically the wettest month. Not recommended for sea-focused holidays. Some villas offer significant discounts — but heavy downpours can limit outdoor time.

December

The peak tourist season begins in mid-December. Prices peak sharply, availability tightens, and the island fills with visitors despite November’s wet tail. The festive atmosphere is exceptional if you book early.

How Season Affects Villa Pricing

High season villas in the Plai Laem and Choeng Mon area can be 2–3x the low season rate. A villa priced at 8,000 THB/night in June might be 18,000–22,000 THB in late December. Booking low season for the same villa quality delivers dramatically better value — and the island itself is more pleasant without the crowds.
