The Bait and Switch

You book and pay for Villa A. On arrival, you’re told it’s “under maintenance” and offered a significantly inferior alternative. The lesser villa is presented as comparable but is clearly not. This scam targets last-minute bookings when you have fewer options.

Hidden Fee Escalation

The quoted rate excludes electricity, water, daily housekeeping, service charge, and a mandatory “tourism levy.” By check-in, the actual cost is 40% higher than the advertised price. This isn’t always fraudulent — some fee structures are standard — but undisclosed costs escalated at arrival are a red flag.

Fake Management Company

A professional-looking website with a Koh Samui address and international phone number, but no physical presence. The “properties” are stock photos of real villas scraped from legitimate sites. Payments go to an overseas account and the company disappears.

How to Verify a Koh Samui Villa Is Legitimate

1. Google the exact villa name — does it appear on multiple platforms (Airbnb, Booking.com, VRBO, direct site)? Consistent presence across platforms is a positive signal.
2. Request a video call tour — a legitimate host will do this. A scammer will find excuses. Ask them to walk to a specific room or show you the view from the terrace.
3. Check the address on Google Maps Street View — does a property matching the photos actually exist at the stated address?
4. Ask for a proper rental contract — a legitimate management company always provides one. Read it for cancellation terms, what’s included, and the address of the company.
5. Pay by credit card where possible — credit card payments offer chargeback protection that bank transfers do not.

Safe Booking Platforms for Koh Samui

Booking through established platforms (Airbnb, Booking.com, VRBO/HomeAway) gives you platform-level protection and a complaints process if things go wrong. What to Do If You’ve Been Scammed
