What to do in Koh Samui: Must Do & See

Koh Samui offers far more than its beach-and-cocktail reputation suggests. The island packs an extraordinary range of experiences into a relatively compact area — natural wonders, cultural sites, world-class food, adventure activities, and some of the finest private villas in Asia. Here’s your authoritative guide to what to do in Koh Samui, organised so you can make the most of however many days you have.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

Non-negotiable. The Ang Thong National Marine Park is a cluster of 42 limestone islands rising from the Gulf of Thailand approximately 30 kilometres northwest of Koh Samui. Day trips depart from Bangrak Pier (Big Buddha Pier) on the north coast and run roughly 8 am to 5 pm. Activities include snorkelling in crystal-clear water, sea kayaking through limestone caves and hidden lagoons, hiking to a panoramic viewpoint, and visiting the emerald lagoon that inspired the novel “The Beach.” Book in advance during peak season — trips fill early.

The Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai)

The most recognised landmark on the island — a 12-metre golden seated Buddha visible from across the northern bay. Free to visit, open daily, and accessible from Bangrak. Visit at dawn or dusk for the most atmospheric light. The causeway approach across the water is lined with market stalls selling offerings and souvenirs.

Wat Plai Laem Temple

Just a few minutes from the Big Buddha, this stunning temple complex sits over the water and features an 18-armed Guanyin figure in striking pink and gold. One of the most photogenic temples in all of Thailand, and far less visited than it deserves. Arrive early morning for the best light and fewest visitors. The Plai Laem area’s hillside villas have views of both temples from their terraces.

Na Muang Waterfall

Koh Samui’s best inland experience. The lower falls (Na Muang 1) are a short walk from the car park; the upper falls (Na Muang 2) require a 1.5 km uphill hike but reward with a dramatically larger cascade and a natural swimming pool. Go on a weekday morning to avoid the crowds that arrive by afternoon.

Bophut Fisherman’s Village Walking Street

Every Friday evening, the historic lane of Bophut village transforms into one of the island’s best night markets. Local food, crafts, live music, and a genuine community atmosphere distinguish it from the more commercial Chaweng market scene. Arrive at 5:30 pm as stalls set up for the best experience.

Choeng Mon Beach

The most beautiful beach on Koh Samui’s north coast — calm, clear water, modest development, and a relaxed atmosphere entirely unlike Chaweng’s bustle. The beach is directly accessible from the Plai Laem area and perfect for morning swimming, paddleboarding, and sea kayaking. Boat rentals and snorkel gear are available from the beach.

Muay Thai Evenings

Catching a live Muay Thai bout is one of the most memorable evenings you can have in Koh Samui. The Chaweng Stadium and Lamai Stadium both host regular shows with a mix of amateur and professional fighters. The atmosphere — traditional music, enthusiastic crowd, and the genuine athleticism of the sport — is unlike anything else. Tickets run approximately 1,200-1,800 THB ringside.

Morning Markets

The Bangrak Morning Market (running 5:30-9 am) is one of the island’s best everyday experiences. Locals gather for breakfast, fresh produce, and household supplies. The food stalls serve exceptional Thai breakfast at 30-80 THB per dish. It’s the most authentic hour you can spend on Koh Samui, and most tourists entirely miss it.

Sunset From Nathon Pier

The west coast capital of Nathon has Koh Samui’s best sunset vantage point from its long pier. The silhouettes of the Ang Thong islands on the horizon at sunset, with the sky turning orange and pink behind them, is a view that photographs can only approximate. Bring something cold to drink and no particular agenda.
